Beating COVID-19 has become a worldwide effort. As the global pandemic spreads, nations are trying to take an example from countries who are managing to keep a low death count amidst COVID-19 outbreaks. One of these countries is Israel.
Despite having over 15,300 confirmed cases, the number of deaths from COVID-19 in Israel is at a notably low count of 199 deaths. Other countries suffer from an average death toll of 3.4% – 7% out of confirmed cases of COVID-19. Israel’s percent still stands at approximately 1.3%.

In such instances, they are not counted as COVID-19 patients and in countries where testing for COVID-19 is reserved only for the very sick, the total number of COVID-19 patients will be reported as very low compared to the actual amount of cases. This will lead to a higher death percentage from the total confirmed cases. However, this is not a reasonable explanation since Israel has a relatively high proportion of tests per population.
Since COVID-19 has a higher death rate in the elderly and patients with concurrent diseases, any population in which the median age is lower and the population is relatively healthy should have a lower death rate from COVID-19. Indeed, Israel’s population is relatively young when compared to many European countries.
Another possible explanation is that there is some sort of “Natural immunity” to SARS-COV2 (the virus causing COVID-19). Other Coronaviruses infect people on a regular basis and neutralizing antibodies to these other coronaviruses (Coronaviruses not causing COVID-19) exist in some people. Yet, it is still unknown if antibodies to other coronaviruses can change the severity or prevent COVID-19. However, if the Israeli population has more people who have antibodies to other Coronaviruses, this may have an effect on the lower death rate of COVID-19 in Israel.
Another conceivable explanation has to do with genetics. It is well known that certain populations have genetic alterations making them less susceptible to specific infectious diseases. Scientists are now exploring this option, though it will take time to test this hypothesis.
Recent studies have shown that Zinc is an important mineral in combating the effects of COVID-19. In addition, vitamin D is also important for the function of the immune system. It is very possible that in populations with lower zinc and/or vitamin D levels the death rate from COVID-19 will be higher and lower in countries in which people have normal or elevated zinc and vitamin D concentrations.
Beyond guesses and other explanations yet to be proven, Israel has an irrefutable explanation: people in Israel have been compliant with the new regulations, including proper and frequent hand washing. The number of infections has been kept to a relative minimum thanks to practicing hand hygiene throughout the country. Even before choosing to place the country under lock-down, Israel’s government has instructed all of its citizens to wash their hands. The government even invested in many commercials explaining how to wash hands and why it was important. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, addressed the people several times in special conferences, stressing the importance of hand hygiene and sanitization in these times. These warnings have positively affected Israel, resulting in a low death count for the country.
